Your Rwandan journey begins at Kigali International Airport, where you meet your guide and leave the clean, winding avenues of the capital behind to travel south toward Nyungwe National Park. Your route passes through the historic town of Butare, pausing for enriching cultural stops at the elegant, dome-shaped King’s Palace in Nyanza and the Ethnographic National Museum, which houses some of East Africa’s finest structural and historical collections. After a fresh lunch en route, the landscape rises into mist-covered hillsides as you approach Nyungwe Forest, checking into the ultra-luxurious One&Only Nyungwe House. Surrounded by working tea plantations on the edge of an ancient rainforest canopy, you spend a peaceful evening relaxing in your luxury suite and dining on fresh, locally inspired cuisine.
The next morning breaks with an early start as you enter the dense canopy of Nyungwe National Park to track wild chimpanzees and other resident primates. You walk through the prehistoric mountain forest, guided by the vocalizations of the chimps echoing through the trees, until you locate the troop feeding, swinging, and socialising in the high branches. After returning to the lodge for a brief rest, you set out again in the afternoon for a thrilling canopy walk, tracking across a seventy-meter-high suspended metal bridge that hangs directly above the jungle floor, offering a bird’s-eye view of rare birdlife, butterflies, and endless green valleys before returning to the resort for dinner.
On day three, you head back into the forest for a morning trek to locate the park’s resident troops of Rwenzori colobus monkeys, marveling at the sight of hundreds of these sharply contrasted, black-and-white primates leaping through the canopy. In the afternoon, you leave the deep jungle behind and embark on a scenic drive along the rolling shoreline of Lake Kivu, arriving in the resort town of Gisenyi. You check into the Lake Kivu Serena Hotel, an elegant property set directly on a sandy tropical beach, where you spend the evening unwinding to the gentle sounds of the water on a full board basis.
Your adventure continues on day four as you drive away from the lakeside beaches, tracking northward along the edge of Lake Kivu toward the dramatic volcanic peaks of the northern frontier. Winding past terraced agricultural hillsides, you arrive in the foothills of Volcanoes National Park, checking into Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge. Perched high on the dramatic slopes of the Virunga Volcanoes, the stone cottages offer a cozy, atmospheric afternoon to rest by the fireplace, enjoy classic mountain hospitality, and prepare for the grand adventure ahead.
The fifth morning begins early with an air of quiet anticipation as you transfer to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters for an essential safety briefing and gorilla group assignment. Alongside expert trackers, you step into the dense bamboo thickets, climbing the mist-veiled mountain slopes until you come face-to-face with a mountain gorilla family. You spend one unforgettable hour quietly observing their social bonds, watching playful juveniles tumble through the foliage under the watchful eye of a powerful silverback. Following this profound wildlife encounter, you make your way down the slopes and return to Kigali, checking into the refined comfort of the Kigali Serena Hotel for a final evening of celebration and rest.
Your spectacular multi-park Rwandan safari concludes on day six. After enjoying a rich breakfast featuring fresh local coffee on the hotel terrace, you gather your belongings and your exceptional memories of the rainforests and volcanic peaks. A private driver transfers you smoothly through the capital to Kigali International Airport, arriving in perfect time to check in for your onward international flight home.
