Omo Valley Tribes

8 Days 7 Nights

Your historic and cultural expedition through Ethiopia begins in the vibrant capital of Addis Ababa, where a representative from Campofrio Safaris welcomes you upon arrival at Bole International Airport. You immediately embark on an enriching city tour, starting at the magnificent Holy Trinity Cathedral, a grand Orthodox structure built in 1955 to commemorate Emperor Haile Selassie’s silver jubilee. From there, you delve into humanity’s deepest roots at the National Museum, standing face-to-face with the famous three-point-two-million-year-old fossil of Lucy. After a flavorful lunch of local delicacies, your exploration continues at the Ethnological Museum, housed within the former imperial palace of Haile Selassie, providing an intimate look into the diverse cultures of Ethiopia’s many ethnic groups. The day concludes with a scenic drive up Mount Entoto, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the sprawling city below before you retire to a comfortable hotel for the evening.

The next morning, you leave the bustling capital behind and depart on a full-day, deeply scenic road journey southward toward Arba Minch, the gateway to the Rift Valley. As the urban landscape transitions into rolling hills and patchwork fields, you pause along the way to explore remarkable ancient archaeological sites, marveling at the mysterious, carved megalithic stelae of Tiya, the rock-hewn church of Adadi Mariyam, or the prehistoric tool-making grounds of Melka Kunture. You arrive in Arba Minch in the late afternoon, checking into your hotel as the sun sets over the dramatic escarpment.

On day three, after breakfast, you travel up into the high, misty Gughe Mountains to visit a traditional Dorze village. Here, you meet a community globally renowned for their towering, beehive-style homes woven from bamboo and their exceptional cotton weaving skills. Depending on the day of your visit, you have the chance to wander through a vibrant local market, interacting with traders from across the hillsides. In the afternoon, you descend back to the valley floor for a peaceful boat ride across the waters of Lake Chamo, catching spectacular close-up views of massive Nile crocodiles basking on the banks and pods of hippos wallowing in the shallows.

Your journey takes you deeper into the Lower Omo Valley on day four as you drive toward Jinka. The road snakes through a stunning cultural landscape, allowing for stops at the terraced hillsides of the Konso people and the traditional villages of the Tsemay and Bena communities. If your travels fall on a Thursday, you enjoy the added highlight of exploring the bustling Key Afer market, a fascinating gathering place where different tribes meet to trade goods in a kaleidoscope of colors. You conclude the day with a relaxing evening at a hotel in Jinka.

The fifth morning begins with an early drive through the rugged landscapes of Mago National Park, heading toward an isolated Mursi village. This encounter introduces you to one of Africa’s most distinctive cultures, famous for the large clay lip and ear plates worn by the women as a striking sign of beauty and status. After spending time learning about their pastoralist way of life, you return to Jinka for lunch before continuing your route south to Turmi, passing through the lively tribal trading outposts of Dimeka and Key Afer before settling into your hotel for the night.

Day six brings an unforgettable day trip further south to Omorate, situated near the Kenyan border along the banks of the Omo River. Here, you cross the river waters in a traditional dugout canoe to meet the resilient Dassanech community, exploring their unique, dome-shaped architectural dwellings and learning about their survival in this semi-arid delta. In the afternoon, you return to Turmi to visit a local Hamer village, famous for their elaborate clay-braided hairstyles, intricate beadwork, and liquid-metal jewelry. If timing aligns, you may even have the extraordinary opportunity to witness a traditional cultural ceremony, such as the famous bull-jumping rite of passage, before returning to your hotel.

On day seven, you bid farewell to the deep Omo Valley and begin your return journey northward to Arba Minch. The drive back offers a wonderful chance to catch any cultural visits or roadside markets you might have missed, stopping once more among the vibrant crowds of Key Afer or exploring the fascinating, fortified stone-walled villages of the UNESCO-listed Konso community. You arrive back in Arba Minch by evening, enjoying a comfortable final night in the southern highlands.

Your grand Ethiopian expedition concludes on day eight. You embark on the final drive back to Addis Ababa, enjoying the changing scenery of the Great Rift Valley one last time, with an optional morning stop to witness the lively, chaotic energy of the Lake Awassa fish market as local fishermen bring in their daily catch. Arriving back in the capital, you are smoothly transferred to Bole International Airport in perfect time to check in for your onward international flight home.
